Laser Enabled Security System

This kit gives students an opportunity to design and build their own laser-enabled museum security system.

Equipped with a laser, photo sensor, sound alarm, and other necessary tools, this kit can be used for classroom activities and outreach events.

Through interactive exploration and engagement, students deepen their subject knowledge in math, geometry, physics and optics, as well as enhance critical thinking, problem solving, troubleshooting, and soft skills.

This kit is an effective tool for any STEM outreach activities and was designed for students of all ages.

Activity description:

The goal of this activity is to design a security system that protects and encloses a treasure by a laser beam that reflects off of two plane mirrors.  

Applying the Law of Reflection of Light, students need to place the laser source, mirrors, and the sound alarm so that even a slight movement of the treasure triggers the alarm.  The alarm system is ready and activated when it is turned on and the laser beam directly strikes its sensor aperture. If the museum security is bridged, by breaking any of the laser beams, the sound alarm will go off.
